By now, we all know about the importance of sunscreen, especially during these warm, sun-drenched months. But did you know that research shows that users only get about a third of the protection offered by sunscreens because they’re not applying it properly?
So, yes, while you’re more than halfway there by applying sunscreen in the first place, the other vital part of the equation is how you’re applying it and how often.
Start off with a mineral-based sunscreen like our award-winning, mineral-based California Baby® Broad Spectrum SPF 30 that uses a non-whitening titanium dioxide.
California Baby® sunscreens are concentrated, so remember: a little goes a long way. A dime-sized amount is perfect for the face and a half-dollar for the body. Instead of squeezing the product into your hands, rubbing together and then applying (which really only helps to protect your palms!), try dispensing the needed amount into one hand and use the finger on the opposite hand to scoop up some sunscreen and dot-dot-dot it on skin.
After skin is dotted, use a clean makeup sponge or your hands to rub in and to create an even layer.
And as with all sunscreens, be sure to reapply if you’re going to stay in the sun, especially at the pool or beach where kids are constantly in and out of the water. California Baby® sunscreens retain effectiveness after 80 minutes of activity in water or perspiring. Dry off, reapply, and you’re good to go!
